About

Consonant Productions

We can, we must, we shall be heard.

Theatre about the things people are not supposed to say, made by people who have spent their working lives on stage.

The company

Consonant Productions makes theatre about the things people are not supposed to say, and tries to make an audience laugh while it is being said.

The name carries both meanings: the sounds the throat shapes, and what it is to be in agreement with someone. The company was founded by Barbara Mariposa in 2026, and I’m not little, I’m Barbara is its next production. Other work will follow, by Barbara and by other writers.

We are interested in work that is funny about serious things, that uses music and live performance, and that gives an audience somewhere to go afterwards.

I’m not little, I’m Barbara is a solo play with real heat in it, carried by one performer for an hour and shaped by a director with twenty years of London stages behind her. Neither of them is new to this, and it shows in the pacing, the comedy and the music.

How we work

We make work that is funny about serious things. Humour is not a way of softening a subject, it is how an audience stays in the room long enough to hear it.

Live music and a performer's own voice do more in a small theatre than any amount of staging, so our work tends to use both.

We think an audience should be given somewhere to go afterwards. That means content notes before, support lines in the programme, and a conversation after the show where the subject calls for one.

We read unsolicited scripts, and we are particularly interested in writing that is funny about something serious.

Behind the work are Barbara Mariposa, a trained actor with stage and screen credits, and JodyAnne Fletcher Richardson, twenty years into a life in London theatre.
